Everything you need to stay secure

1Password handles the hard parts of good password hygiene — so you only need to remember one master password while every other account stays unique and protected.

🔒 Strong passwords & passkeys

Automatically generate long, unique, random passwords for every account. 1Password also supports passkeys — the modern passwordless standard — for sites that offer it.

🗄️ Secure vaults

Store passwords, credit cards, software licenses, secure notes, and identity documents in encrypted vaults. Only you — and people you explicitly share with — can see the contents.

🌐 Autofill & browser extension

The 1Password browser extension detects login forms and fills credentials automatically in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Works on desktop and mobile browsers.

🔗 Secure sharing

Share individual credentials or entire vaults with colleagues, teams, or family members — without exposing the underlying password. Revoke access at any time.

📂 Multiple vaults

Organize credentials into separate vaults — work, personal, shared team — each with its own access controls. Keep your UT accounts separate from personal ones.

📱 Cross-device sync

Install 1Password on your Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, or Android phone. Everything stays in sync automatically — add a password on your laptop, use it instantly on your phone.

Faculty & Staff setup

The rollout began in August 2025. If you haven't received your invitation yet, request access through the ServiceNow service catalog.

1. Check your EID email for your invitation Look for an email sent to yourEID@eid.utexas.edu from 1Password containing a "Join Now" button. This is your personalized activation link — do not forward it to others.
2. Sign in with your UT EID email When prompted for your email address, use the EID@eid.utexas.edu format (not your @utexas.edu or @austin.utexas.edu address). This links your account to UT's enterprise tenant.
3. Set your master password Choose a strong, unique master password you haven't used elsewhere — this is the one password you'll need to remember. 1Password will provide a Secret Key as an additional security factor; store it somewhere safe.
4. Install the desktop app and browser extension Download the 1Password app for Mac or Windows and install the browser extension for your preferred browser. Enable autofill in your browser settings to get the most out of the service.
5. Claim your free Families account As a faculty or staff Enterprise member, you receive a complimentary 1Password Families account for personal use — covering up to five family members. Look for the invitation to the Families account within your 1Password app after signing in.

Student setup

Students receive a free four-year personal account using their UT student email.

1. Request your student coupon Visit the 1Password service page in the ServiceNow catalog and request a student coupon code. You will need your @my.utexas.edu email address.
2. Redeem your coupon at 1password.com Go to 1password.com, select individual/personal account, and enter your coupon code at checkout to activate your free four-year subscription.
3. Install on your devices Download 1Password for Mac, Windows, iOS, or Android. Install the browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. Your account syncs across all devices automatically.

Moving from Stache

Stache — UT's previous password management tool — is being retired. 1Password is its replacement. Plan your migration well in advance of the deadlines.

Summer 2026
Stache becomes read-only — no new items can be added or edited
December 2026
Stache is fully retired — all data permanently deleted

Export your Stache data now

Log in to Stache and export your credentials before Summer 2026. Exported files are unencrypted — handle them carefully and delete them after importing into 1Password.

Import into 1Password

Use 1Password's built-in import tool to bring your Stache export into your personal vault. Review and organize items into appropriate vaults after importing.
